WHY WE’RE A NON-PROFIT
The average age of people working in the performing arts field is approximately 40; the most common age range being 26-29. White people are the majority when it comes to having a performing arts degrees, (57%). Interestingly enough, women predominantly hold performing arts degrees (59.9%) but are still underrepresented, misrepresented, and mistreated within the arts. These statistics do not include or recognize gender queer people. These stats also exclude the ratio between able bodied and disabled persons within performing arts and how they are underrepresented/misrepresented as well. The purpose of this hypothetical company is unity, diversity, and outreach through music- while incorporating other art forms such as theatre and/or dance- in efforts to push the “new music” movement and create jobs/performance opportunities for underrepresented persons.
A national overview of non-profit cultural arts centers and performing arts programs with a budget over $50,000 totaled to 39,292 according to an article written by Zannie and Glenn Voss (two established directors in Arts Research). According to the RAND Corporation, “The number of nonprofit performing arts organizations increased by over 80 percent between 1982 and 1997, while the number of commercial performing arts organizations increased by over 40 percent”.
The primary benefits of nonprofits are tax exemption, eligibility for public grants, and limited liability under law. The purpose of our nonprofit is to do good services for the public, not to make money.
